  • Short Bio / Excerpt:

Nury Vittachi is a prominent Sri Lankan-born British journalist, author, and cultural commentator who has been a definitive voice in Hong Kong's English-language media landscape for decades. Born on October 2, 1958, in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to a family of journalists, he fled his homeland during his childhood due to political unrest stemming from his father Tarzie Vittachi's sharp newspaper columns. Raised in the United Kingdom, Vittachi developed a natural inclination for investigative storytelling and satire, sharpening his journalistic toolkit on London's famous Fleet Street before permanently relocating to Hong Kong.

Vittachi's early career in Hong Kong was defined by his sharp wit and biting humor as a popular lifestyle and gossip columnist. He rose to regional prominence writing the celebrated "Lai See" and "Spice Trader" columns for the South China Morning Post (SCMP). Known for his satirical take on local high society, expatriate eccentricities, and regional political dynamics, he also served as an editor for the Far Eastern Economic Review. Over the years, his sharp, variegated, and creative style of journalism earned him a massive local following, firmly anchoring him within the city's media ecosystem.

Beyond his journalistic commentary, Vittachi is a prolific author who has published over 40 books stretching across adult fiction, non-fiction, and children's literature. He captured global literary acclaim as the creator of The Feng Shui Detective comedy-crime novel series, which skillfully utilizes Asian cultural themes to unfold engaging, cross-cultural detective mysteries. A passionate advocate for improving the literary climate across Asia, Vittachi has also been instrumental in co-founding several major regional milestones, including the Hong Kong International Literary Festival, the Asia Literary Review, and the Man Asian Literary Prize.

In recent years, Vittachi's professional output has expanded to encompass contemporary geopolitical analysis and media criticism. Currently operating as the editor of the digital platform Fridayeveryday and writing columns for The Standard, his commentary frequently examines Western media framing of Asian and Chinese socio-political affairs. His 2020 non-fiction book, The Other Side of the Story: A Secret War in Hong Kong, catalyzed dense public discourse by offering alternative perspectives on the city's 2019 social unrest and questioning external geopolitical influences.

Today, Vittachi remains deeply embedded in Hong Kong's academic, educational, and creative communities. Alongside his ongoing geopolitical writings and frequent media appearances on outlets like the BBC and CNN, he has served as a Teaching Fellow at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, mentoring young writers and designers on narrative structure. He continues to chair projects for the Youth Literature Foundation and compile the Hong Kong Young Writers Awards Anthologies. Settled in Hong Kong with his English wife and their three adopted Chinese children, Vittachi continues to advocate for the city as a dynamic intersection where Eastern and Western perspectives seamlessly blend.
